Allen & Heath ZED 12 FX
100 mm Alps faders, single screwed potis and XLR-jacked interface make the ZED-series from Allen & Heath a really cheap working-horse. Through the USB-gateway a sampling rate of 32, 44.1 or 48 kHz can be digitalized by 16 bits. The USB-send stereo signal can be chosen between AUX 1-2, AUX 3-4 or the master stereo-out pre-fader. Thus, it is not only possible to make your own mix, but also to use the Sonar Software as a multi-effect (latency depends on the computer performance).
The ZED-series is equipped with the new Duo PreTM preamp, developed by Mike Griffin. The Duo PreTM has not got a PAD-taster, but has a two-stage design, whereas most emphasis has been put on the gain area of both stages so that the Duo PreTM can offer large headroom reserves.
"The DuoPre preamp consists of a great input-switching for microphones as well as an optimal input for line signals. It therefore offers a massive 69 dB gain range what means that the XLR-input can deal with every signal that is at its entrance", explains Griffin. "The line input interrupts the first stage automatically, which means that no signal adaption switching is neccessary - so the signal is influenced less, what results in having a better signal at the end."
Two pre-fade aux-ways allow great monitor possibilities. The monitor channels are listened in to per headphones- or local-monitor outputs in the monitor section. Through these all PFL-signals of the inputs, the 2-track and USB-inputs, as well as the total can be listened in to.
Alongside the ZED-mixers the customer gains Cakewalk´s SONAR LE-Software. This offers its user different application possibilities like live-music, live-recording, studio-recording or studio-mixing. SONAR LE-software is a digital audio workstation which runs under Windows Vista and XP. The LE-version offers two instruments, six MIDI effects and 14 audio effects. It supports 64 tracks and 24 effects on tracks, 8 physical in- and outputs of up to 24bit/192 kHz.
The combination of ZED and SONAR LE allows the user different application possibilities: simple recordings of the stereo mix, recordings of single tracks or of effect-inserts with an FX plug-in from the SONAR LE. The USB-output of the ZED can also playback the aux-ways in pairs or in total.
"Allen & Heath have been building mixers for 40 years and that´s why we know what makes a good mixer - the perfect sound, best manufacture and optimal application" explains Glenn Rogers, executive of the compüany. "The ZED-14 is a flexible, inexpensive mixer for modern musicians, applicable at live performances or in studios.
