Audix OM2
Features at a glance:
The OM-2 is an American-made, dynamic microphone specifically tailored for live-performance. It is characterised with a hypercardioid pickup pattern working over a frequency response of 50 Hz - 16 kHz. Just as Audix’s high-end touring vocal microphones, the OM-s offers the same comfortable profile and features a low-reflective, black e-coat finish. Not only does it exhibit a transformerless design, but also a capsule featuring VLM technology, along with a low-impedance and symmetrical output jack which ensures interference-free performance- even with long cable runs. VLM stands for the patented Very Low Mass technology and enables the acoustic signal to be conversed into an electric signal effectively. This technology is particularly important for percussive signals. The rugged grill ball and the microphone’s capability to handle sound pressure levels of up to 140 dB make the OM-2 highly capable to withstand the tough demands of touring and live performance.
It’s an affordable alternative to the OM5 and offers the same sonic characteristics, noise-rejection and SPL capabilities. Compared the OM-3, the OM-2 has slightly more bass proximity.
MP-Rating: The OM-2 features has a very rugged construction, delivers great performance and along its capability to easily handle SPLs of up to 140 dB, it is a great microphone which is highly suitable for a wide range of applications: 4 Stars!

1 Star – still room for improvement!

What are handheld vocal microphones?
Microphones that you hold in your hands while performing are considered as handheld vocal microphones. These microphones have to fulfil certain criteria. They need to offer high feedback-rejection and most of them feature cardioid, supercardioid or hypercardioid polar patterns. In addition they are required to provide a rugged construction, full bass and crispy highs. Their frequency response is usually tailored, because these microphones are designed for vocal pickup. Models featuring a pronounced proximity effect are frequently used. When choosing a mic, you should also make sure that wind and breath "pop" noise as well as handling noise are sufficiently suppressed.
