Audix OM7
Features at a glance:
Being a top-quality, dynamic vocal mic, the OM-7 is one of the 3 high-end products from the OM-series. Produced in the mid-90s primarily for concert rock touring bands with exceptionally loud stage volumes, the OM7 has earned reputation in the pro sound industry as being the “ultimate gain before feedback” microphone.
The OM-7 features an unconventional low-output level and has a built-in pad which allows for the natural full audio range of the capsule to be used. It is capable of handling high sound pressure levels without distortion and delivers a very natural, linear sound. In comparison to the OM-5, the OM-7 is designed with a very low output level and is sonically similar to the OM-6. Its VLM type C capsule ensures precise, clear signal conversion and sound reproduction, free from distortion.
MP-Rating: The OM-7 is the flagship of the OM-series. It is particularly suited for the applications involving loud stage volumes because it features and exceptionally high feedback resistance. A well-deserved 6 Stars!
Legend:
1 Star – still room for improvement!
2 Stars – satisfactory overall impression!
3 Stars – good price/performance value!
4 Stars – very recommendable!
5 Stars – highly recommendable!
6 Stars – unbeatable top product!
What are handheld vocal microphones?
Microphones that you hold in your hands while performing are considered as handheld vocal microphones. These microphones have to fulfil certain criteria. They need to offer high feedback-rejection and most of them feature cardioid, supercardioid or hypercardioid polar patterns. In addition they are required to provide a rugged construction, full bass and crispy highs. Their frequency response is usually tailored, because these microphones are designed for vocal pickup. Models featuring a pronounced proximity effect are frequently used. When choosing a mic, you should also make sure that wind and breath "pop" noise as well as handling noise are sufficiently suppressed.
