Bandsman Flutes

The bandsman flute is originally from the military of medieval times. The instrument had to have different features to deal with the hard conditions of the time. It had to be easy to clean, robust, climate-insensitive and simple. That equals up top the sopano flute which can do without valves and paddings and other fragile materials.

As the flute used to be played with the drum, it was also called "drummers fife". Another term is "transverse flute" as it is held sideways when played. At the end of the day the term "bandsman flute" has taken hold, as this instrument is usually played in bands.

Normally you would find bandsmen with one-piece flutes. They are very insensitive and can be played outdoors - no matter the weather. High-quality flutes are two-pieced, but what´s unusual is to find a wooden flute although they have a warmer and more pleasant sound. Their disadvantage is the sensibility of the material and the rather high price. What have not achieved any acceptance at all are the inexpensive flutes made of plastic - their sound leaves nothing to be desired.

You can get the bandmans flute of the following types: diskant, soprano, alto and tenor.

The History of the Ocarina

Long ago the Maya, the Aztecs and the Inca used to play the ocarina. The term "ocarina" means gosling and was built in different shapes and sizes: pear-shaped, carrot-shaped or in different animal shapes (e.g. turtle or birds).

The Italian blowpiper Guiseppe Donate developed the carrot-shaped ocarina in the middle of the 19th century. In 1863 an ocarina-quintet performed for the first time in Budria.

You can get the ocarina in sopranonino, soprano, alto, tenor and bass.

The Ocarina´s Scale

  • 4-hole-system (easy-ocarina for early educatiion and players who can´t read notes)
  • 7-hole-system from Rotter (one chromatic scale)
  • 8-hole-system (average to simple play)
  • 10-hole-system from Rotter, Plaschke or Posh with 1,5 octaves in diverse keys, from a piccolo to a bass
  • 12-hole-system from St. Louis with 1,5 octaves including variety possibilities

The History of the Traditional Nose Whistle

The well-known nose whistle originates from South America, South Asia and Oceania. It has a longish form (similar to the transverse flute) and is played with the nose. Whilst playing the instrument is held at one nose-hole and the other nose-hole is held closed by another object.

Simple Nose Whistles

The nose whistle is held over the nose and mouth. By breathing in and out a noise is created. By changing the size of the oral cavity the tone pitch is defined. Different effects can be made with the tounge. You can play any song of any type on the nose whistle.

In 1991 the Original Oberkreuzberg Nose Whistle Orchestra was founded which joined the band "Die Ärzte" on tour.
