Fulltone SSTE Solid State Tape Echo · Guitar Effect

The new Solid State Tape Echo from Fulltone. Not even half as big as the original Echoplex, hand-wired and solid as a tank.

The Fulltone SSTE can be used with the 1/4 "Fulltone ETC-1 tapes, but without the humming and noises that one knows of from old Echoplex machines. Also long cable paths are no problem in comparison to the original, just like any other device that may be Before or after the SSTE in the signal chain.

Two tape speeds and a moving playback button offer delays ranging from rockabilly slapback to one second delay time. An moveable play head is, by the way, the only way to achieve self-oscillating effects ála Jimmy Page.

There are two preamp modes, one of which is identical to the TIS58 JFET circuitry of the first version of the Echoplex EP-3 and has this bass-cut and treble boost, as Jimmy Page, Brian May and Steve Stevens prefer. Excellent for loud stage situations. The second mode is a powerful full-range sound, if you are not on the EP-3 sound.

The SSTE has separate controls for the volume of the original signal and the effect volume, as opposed to the EP-3's "mix" control, which had a fixed volume for the original signal and amplified the hum when turned clockwise. With the SSTE, the control for the original signal has a center detent, which is almost a 1: 1 and up to 10 dB Cleanboost, if you turn clockwise.

The "Echo Highs" switch only affects the effect signal.

The vintage mode simulates the circuitry of an old Echoplex. Old Echoplexes have pretty much a lot of perimeter noise, and in order to avoid that, the high range in which it was noisy was simply eliminated by an intermediate resistor - a primitive but effective solution and part of the EP-3 sound.
The Brilliant mode now allows the echo to echo more overtones and more highs - without the noise.

The record level controls how much signal is applied to the tape. The 3 o'clock position is normal, going beyond it, the sound becomes richer.
