Gibson Collector's Choice #34 ''Blackburst · Electric Guitar

At the beginning of 1960 Gibson, at the request of the former owner, actually did the unspeakable: they resprayed an already sunburst finished Les Paul with black lacquer. This act, which is now seen as a blasphemous act, was at that time nothing special, and had its reason. The first owner had fallen in love with the glossy black look of the Les Paul Custom, but unfortunately he did not have the necessary money to buy the more expensive guitar. So the cheaper model was painted black.
In time, however, the true nature of the guitar under its black shell was evident. Nowadays this guitar is known under the name "Blackburst" and is part of a private collection.

The replica of this unique guitar is now offered by Gibson in a strictly limited edition. As with all models of the Collector's Choice the original was, of course, meticulously measured, analyzed and reproduced. As with the original, the guitar was painted first in Sunburst and then in Ebony. Each guitar is accompanied with a "before" photo, which documents what is hidden under the black colour...

Gibson Collector's Choice
With the Collector's Choice series introduced in 2010, Gibson has landed a massive coup. Following the success of the 1:1 copies of guitars played by celebrities such as Billy Gibbons, Jimmy Page or Gary Rossington, the Collector's Choice series extends the portofolio by offering 1:1 copies of vintage Les Pauls, which are owned by collectors and hence not that popular (yet), but nevertheless are fantastic instruments. The efforts involved in this procedure are almost beyond imagination. The most important aspect of a Collector's Choice is, that the original guitar gets scanned by a laser. To execute this, the guitar either comes to Gibson, or Gibson goes to the guitar. Whatever is necessary to receive a copy as perfect as possible. The tiniest details of each model are meticulously documented and reproduced because, as Custom Shop Historic Program Manager Edwin Wilson states, "our customers would never detect these details on the original guitar by themselves, but they expect us to do so.
